About Nerja

Nerja, Costa Del Sol, Spain

The old 'Naricha' which meant 'abundant spring water' in Arabic, has for centuries been renowned for its natural beauty, soft climate and rich resources, having been protected by encircling, mountains since the beginning of time. Truly a unique location.

Today Nerja pronounced (Nerka by the locals) is a village of fishermen, farmers and tradesmen, it is dazzled by flowers, awed by mountains and glowing in the climate. It is without doubt the most beautiful area on the Costa Del Sol. 40 miles east of Malaga, Nerja is composed of blinding white buildings perched on a series of low cliffs around and above small coves, right on the Mediterranean.

Nerja is dominated by mountains. Behind Nerja is the great Sierra Almihara range, rising in a semi-circle some two miles inland, providing a dramatic setting for sunrises and sun sets, coming right down to the sea on both sides of the green and fertile plain on which Nerja is situated.

About Nerja, Costa Del Sol, Spain

It is the protective influence of the mountains that earn for Nerja the reputation of having the best climate on the Costa Del Sol, a little warmer in winter but not too hot in Summer. The winter sun ripens tomatoes, sugar cane, strawberries and avocado pears. In December the poinsettia are in full colour. In February the almond trees blossom. Summer is a profusion of colour.

Nerja is now the choice of discerning holiday makers and villa owners who wish to escape from the hurly burly of life, yet still enjoy the highest possible standards for their rest and recreation.

Although Nerja is only one hour's distance from Malaga airport it is whole world away from the high rise apartment blocks and the concrete hotels along the coast. Here instead you will find Andalusian style villas and town houses, set in sunny olive groves around the village and enjoying unobstructed views of the sea and of the ever-present mountains behind. Here too you will find much to see and plenty to do - the Nerja caves discovered in 1959 but with traces of life 3000 years old. Excellent fine sandy beaches and coves with clear water, where you can enjoy water skiing, wind surfing or scuba diving. Mountain walks, treks or drives.

Beach restaurants serving delicious paellas cooked in giant pans on fires on the sand. The Balcon de Europa, a famous esplanade with spectacular views, where coffee at an outdoor café becomes a ritual. Several restaurants of international standards. Traditional bars with flamenco music and dancing. Interesting shops and local crafts, and much more waiting to be discovered.
